Mitt's Birther Epiphany

Last night, Rev Al Sharpton, Melissa Harris-Perry and Dana Milbank had a good discussion about the repercussions surrounding Romney's unguarded remark, which reeked of birtherism.

Sure, nobody ever asked to see Mitt's birth certificate because they knew he was born in Michigan, and it's also true that people born outside the United States cannot run for President.

But consider this: In 1968, George Romney, governor of Michigan and father of Mitt, ran for the GOP nomination. George Romney's grandfather left Utah in the late 19th Century and resettled in Mexico rather than give up his five wives. George Romney, himself, was born in Mexico and didn't return to the US to live until he was eight.

Nobody ever asked to see Mitt's birth certificate, but no one ever remarked on Old Man George's ineligibility to run for President of the United States.

I wonder why.

  1. Americans who believe the birther mess use it to mask their underlying racism and belief that the White House is no place for a person of color. Romney can use all of the dog whistles he wants, but he's not fooling Black Americans, White Americans, Hispanic Americans, and others, who know exactly what he's doing. He's trying to get white working class people to vote for him because he's white and he's not Barack Hussein Obama. For those of us who see through this, we reject Romney and all that he stands for. He's made no effort to show that he'd be a president who represents ALL of us. H3ll, he doesn't even represent the white working class! He'll raise their taxes to give another tax cut to himself and the richest Americans. I ran into a guy on Media Matters' site yesterday who, after hearing Romney's birther joke, declared, "Yeah, I'm glad Romney is on our side!" This appears to be the mindset of many White Americans who plan to vote for Romney in November. They have no interest in whether he's competent or not, all they want is a white man back in "their" White House. IMHO, this is the reason we're in the economic mess we're in at the present time--people voted for GWB because they thought he was someone they could sit down and have a beer with, and they ignored the fact that he had failed at everything he had ever tried to do.
