A Vision of Republican America

Here's Mitt Romney's latest political advert. Don't bother listening to the words belted out against the pumping beat of what he and his PR people reckon is stirring music. It's all empty rhetoric, we know. Instead, as he talks about his "vision of America," look at the faces of all the people in the ad. Every. Last. One. Of. Them.

A stranger to this land and these shores might be forgiven for thinking the United States a particularly homogenous nation. There is not one brown face, not one black face. There are no Asians, no Orientals, no Native Americans, no African-Americans. And all of the adult women look curiously like Stepford Wives.

This is the American of Pleasantville in the 1950s. All it needs is to be denuded of its colour. Give Romney and the Republican Party a chance, and they'll do just that.

Believe me ... now is not the time to go back to the future ...

Scary, isn't it?
